Concussion Management at FYZICAL

At FYZICAL, our Concussion Management program was specifically designed to help our athletes and patients prevent further injury as they recover from a Concussion. A Concussion can present symptoms weeks, months, sometimes even years after the intial injury, which causes an additional risk to those that are still recovering. One of the most alarming risks being that an estimated 40% of athletes return to activity sooner than current guidelines suggest. This can lead to acute lower extremity injuries, more concussions, severe balance disorders, and potentially severe and life altering brain damage.

Our Concussion Management program is proud to offer the Las Vegas valley the following services in Concussion Management:

  • Diagnostic Vestibular Testing
  • Diagnostic Balance Testing
  • Diagnostic Visual Testing
  • Baseline and Post Injury Testing
  • Musculoskeletal Assessment/Measures
  • Vestibular Performance Assessment
  • Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP)
  • VNG/Caloric Testing
  • Strict Return to Play Guidelines
  • Decisions Based on Comprehensive Medical History

What is a Concussion?

A Concussion is a form of mild traumatic brain injury that can cause mutliple neurological symptoms/disorders. If not properly managed, the recovery of a concussion can be delayed, leading to unremitting, life altering symptoms that require multiple medical interventions.

Concussion Symptoms

Concussions have the potential to exhibit two different conditions with varying symptoms. The following details common Concussion and Post-Concussion symptoms that may arise as a result of a Concussion.

  • Concussion Symptoms (After a direct blow to the head is sustained)
    • Headache or a feeling of pressure in the head
    • Temporary Loss of Consciousness
    • Confusion or “Clouded/Foggy” Decision Making
    • Amnesia Surrounding the Event
    • Dizziness or “Seeing Stars”
    • Ringing In The Ears
    • Nausea / Vomiting
    • Slurred Speech
    • Delayed Reactions/Responses
    • Fatigue
  • Post-Concussion Symptoms
    • Headaches (May be associated with a Neck Injury that occured at the time of the head injury)
    • Dizziness
    • Fatigue
    • Anxiety
    • Insomnia
    • Loss of Concentration and Memory
    • Heightened Noise and Light Sensitivity

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, have been experiencing them for an extended period of time, or have recently sustained a head injury, please seek the advice of a medical professional.

Concussion Facts

Although there is continually new research being developed on Concussions, the following are Concussion facts from Sanford Health and from the National Center of Biotechnology Information that are quite alarming!

  • There is approximately 1.6 to 3.8 Million Recreational and Sports Related Concussion annually in the U.S.
  • An estimated 40% of athletes are returning to play sooner than current guidelines may suggest.
  • Most Sports Related Concussions (about 90%) occur without a loss of consciousness.
  • Research suggests 80-90% of Concussions will resolve in 7-10 days.
  • After experiencing a Concussion, an athlete is 3-6 Times more susceptible to suffer another Concussion.
  • Kids will generally require a longer recovery time.
  • An athlete is 1.97 times more likely to experience an Acute Lower Extremity Injury after sustaining a Concussion.
FYZICAL's Concussion Program

Our Concussion Management program utilizes traditional treament methods and techniques in addressing your Concussion, in addition to common diagnostic testing used in FYZICAL’s specialized Vestibular & Balance programs. Our program includes the following Vestibular/Balance Tests:

  • Computerized Dynamic Posturography ( CDP )
    • The CDP is an assessment tool used to objectively quantify and differentiate a wide variety of possible sensory, motor, and central adaptive impairments to balane control as a result of a Concussion or present Post-Concussion Symptoms. The three tests run by the CDP in the exam are the Sensory Organization Test (SOT), Motor Control Test (MCT), and the Adaptation Test (ADT).
  • VNG / Caloric Testing with a Doctor of Audiology
    • VNG/Caloric testing are a series of tests designed to document the patient’s ability to follow visual objects with their eyes and how well their eyes respond to the information that is coming from the vestibular system as a result. This test also tests the functionality of each ear and if the Concussion / Post-Concussion Symptoms are stemming from an underlying dizziness or balance related issue. This is essential in addressing potential problems with visual tracking, reactionary timing, and hand-eye coordination.
  • The Epley Omniax Chair
    • The Epley Omniax Chair is primarily used to treat certian types of positional vertigo, more specifically BPPV. The chair allows us to fully rotate the patient a full 360 degrees to shift internal blockages to the inner ear canals that may be causing dizziness and vertigo symptoms. The chair will also isolate the blockage, allowing our Doctors of Physical Therapy and Audiology to understand where the patient’s deficit is. Not ALL Concussion and Post-Concussion cases can benefit from the use of the chair. Those that are experiencing vertigo/dizziness symptoms may find relief through the use of this treatment.
Concussion Prevention

Concussions can occur in both sport and recreational activity and can even be caused by “minor” contact to the head. Although Concussions cannot fully be prevented (yet), some effective prevention techniques include:

  • The use of a licensed helmet in contact sports
  • Strengthening of the Neck and Shoulder muscles
  • Following proper and strict return to play protocols
  • Educating the patient, athlete, family, coaching staff, etc. on the signs, symptoms, and causes of Concussion.
  • Allow time to pass for a full recovery
  • Baseline Testing

We are here for you.
